The mobile unit for elderly consists of a specialized work team comprising of female social researcher, a female nurse, male rehabilitation assistants for elderly men and female rehabilitation assistants for elderly women. The unit work starts from the Centers and Homes for Elderly that are attached to the Directorate of Social Welfare. The team makes home visits to the elderly and provides the necessary services to them including personal cleanliness, medical examination, physiotherapy, family guidance, arrangement of medical appointments and others. The work team makes three visits to each family per week and covers on average about (20) cases weekly. Currently, there are five mobile units; the first one serves Muharraq region and the surrounding villages and it is financed by Muharraq Social Welfare Center, in addition to two other units that are financed by the National Committee For Elderly, and one unit that is financed by the Bahrain Red Crescent Society, and a fifth unit that is financed by the General Organization for Social Insurance. The last four units serve Manama area and all other regions in Bahrain.
The Mobile Unit Objectives:
1.To provide different living, social psychological, and medical services that are required by the elderly in his home and among his family
2.To train the elderly family members and assist them in taking care of him in his home in a proper manner
3.To provide different apparatuses which the elderly require to facilitate his movement during his stay in his home
4.To alleviate the burdens of the family in taking care of the elderly and to encourage the family in taking care of him and insist on his stay in his home
5.To provide guidance and awareness services, and practical training for the family on the way to take care of the elderly
6.To strengthen the family ties and propinquity and to set a good example for the forthcoming generations in the adherence of Islamic values which include the respect of elderly, maintain his dignity and provide his requirements among his family
Service Provision Conditions:
1. The applicant should be an elderly.
2. The social research should prove the elderly need for the unit’s services.
3. The elderly should not be inflicted with mental disorders or contagious diseases.
Service Provision Procedures:
1.To submit a letter requesting the service by the elderly or his family or by any party, whether individual or collective, to the Directorate of Social Welfare at the Ministry of Social Development
2.To conduct a social research about the case
3.To put a programme pertaining to the family’s requirements, including the services that will be provided in every visit
4.To put a timetable indicating the appointments of the units visits which are in the mornings only. Emphasis is made to the families of the necessity to give a prior notification in case it is not possible for the family to receive the unit
5.An assessment of the service programme is made from time to time in order to amend it according to the development of the elderly condition
